Web Design in Pretoria: 7 Things to Look for Before You Hire Anyone

6 October 2026 · 6 min read · By Saydi Barbosa

Search for web design in Pretoria and you'll find hundreds of options, from freelancers to large agencies. Most of them can make something that looks good. Far fewer can make something that works: a site that brings in enquiries, answers customer questions and makes your business look as capable as it really is.

Before you sign a quote, these are the seven things worth checking.

1. They ask about your business before your colours

A good web designer wants to know who your customers are, what they need to believe before they buy, and what you want them to do on the site. If the first conversation is about templates and colour palettes, the thinking is happening in the wrong order.

2. Mobile comes first, not last

Most South African visitors will see your website on a phone. Ask to see past work on a mobile screen. Check that buttons are easy to tap, text is readable without zooming, and pages load quickly on a normal mobile connection.

3. SEO is built in, not sold as an extra

Proper page titles, descriptions, headings, image descriptions and a clean structure should be part of the build. If you want to be found for searches like 'accountant in Pretoria' or 'wedding venue in Gauteng', the site has to be built for it from day one.

4. You can update it yourself — or know who will

Ask who changes a price, adds a blog post or swaps a photo after launch, and how quickly. A website that can't change is out of date within months.

5. Speed and security are non-negotiable

Slow sites lose visitors and rank lower on Google. Ask how the site is hosted, whether it uses a secure connection (the padlock in the browser), and how it's kept up to date.

6. The words matter as much as the design

Many websites fail because nobody wrote clear copy. Find out whether the designer helps with the words, or whether you'll be left filling empty boxes the night before launch.

7. There's a clear next step on every page

Every page should tell a visitor what to do next: call, book, request a quote or send a WhatsApp. If a site looks beautiful but nobody knows how to contact you, it isn't doing its job.

At SB Consulting we build websites around exactly these principles — strategy first, then design, then a site that's easy to grow. If you're planning a new website in Pretoria or anywhere in South Africa, we'd be happy to talk it through.
